The best places to spend New Year’s Eve 2015 around Melbourne
IT’S the biggest night of the year for party people, here are the top places to ring in the new year, from drinking, dancing, fine dining and private fireworks.

1. Pope Joan
East Brunswick’s favourite day-through-night haunt Pope Joan is throwing a garden party. There will be reggae, funk, rare grooves and disco on the stereo, while tickets include “ridiculously good party food all night”. Choose from food only ($50 a head) or inclusive tickets ($120 with unlimited beer, wine, cider and softies) from 7pm — 1am.

2. Pastuso
Feast like a Peruvian and see in the new year at Pastuso. Dine on classics such as ceviche, skewers, street cart croquettes and roasted meats, washed down with a pisco sour or two. An early seating from 6pm-8.30pm takes care of families; late dining from 9pm will see the revellers through to the next year.

3. The Duke
The Duke is hosting the coolest cocktail party in town. Set over all three levels of the city’s oldest watering hole, a four hour package (8pm-midnight) of bubbles, beer and brilliant bites is $120 a head. With fairground attractions including magicians, contortionists and a caricaturist, along with acoustic musicians — and DJs rocking the Dutchess decks upstairs — this will be a cool cocktail carnival of colour.

4. Maha
See in the new year in nice spice style at Maha, where chef Shane Delia has created a five-course feast of Middle Eastern flavours ($120 a head, food only). The champagne’s on ice, the cocktails are ready to be shaken, the soundtrack sorted — this will be a hot spot to say hello to 2016.

5. Beer DeLuxe
Beer DeLuxe Fed Square is shouting the first schooner of 2016. Kick off the new year with one free beer poured for everyone when the clock strikes 12. Entry is free, with craft brews on tap from around the globe and live music and, of course, fireworks in the night sky. For those who don’t want to battle CBD crowds, Beer DeLuxe Hawthorn will serve food, beer and wine across its many levels from 8pm-1am for $110 a head.

6. Santoni
With its views across the rooftops of the leafy east, the Santoni roof terrace provides the perfect spot for some alfresco-fuelled frivolity, open to all from 11pm. Beforehand, enjoy a four-course set menu of Italian classics with two sittings 6pm-8pm ($70pp) and 8.30pm-late ($90pp).

7. Nieuw Amsterdam
This Hardware St hotspot will be a one-stop goodtime spot on NYE. Upstairs will ring in the Nieuw year with a banquet of lobster, New York strip steak, oysters and more for $75 a head (with drink packages available). Downstairs the party will continue to dawn, with DJs spinning discs from 5pm until 5am and free entry for all.

8. Lakehouse
The Lake House team is hosting a delicious masked black tie party showcasing some of Australia’s best producers and farmers. Start with cocktails on the lake shore while grazing at the “provedore and deli” before heading inside. A sit down multi-course feast will then be served with live music, followed by dancing and fireworks and a few added Lake House surprises. Tickets are $395 per head, with proceeds going to the Country Fire Authority.

9. Terminus Hotel
The resurrected, reinvigorated Terminus Hotel is turning on the old school styles to ring in 2016. A four-hour package of retro-inspired food — think prawn cocktails, devilled eggs and vol au vents — and drink will be served until midnight ($120pp) with the R&B hits keeping the dancefloor pumping until 3am.

10. General Assembly
South Wharf’s General Assembly is making sure the party gets started, offering an all-inclusive food and drink package ($135pp, 7pm-1am) along with music and a private fireworks display by Sydney Harbour’s NYE technicians, Foti International Fireworks.

11. Morris Jones
It will be riot of colour and movement as Morris Jones hosts a Moulin Rouge-inspired party to say goodbye to 2015. Feast on three courses of chef Matthew Butcher’s quirky, contemporary fare — starting with a glass of Moet & Chandon ($99 per head) — or just swing by for drinks and $12 glasses of champagne and enjoy the burlesque dancers and tunes.

12. The Crafty Squire
Previously known as the Portland Hotel, this CBD venue has undergone extensive renovations — and a name change — but the focus on James Squire brews remains. The $95 crafty package consists of four hours (8pm-midnight) of drinks and canapés, including Squire beers, ciders, cocktails, premium spirits, wine and sparkling. The package provides access to all levels of the venue, with DJs playing all night.
